报告人简介:
Brian Ellis received his undergraduate education at the University of New Brunswick in biology and chemistry (1965), and his Ph.D. in plant biochemistry from the University of British Columbia (1969). After postdoctoral training in Germany and Ontario, he joined the faculty at the University of Guelph in 1973 in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Among his other duties at the U. of Guelph, he served as the Acting Director of the Centre for Plant Biotechnology (1986/87).
In 1989, Dr. Ellis became Head of the Department of Plant Science at the University of British Columbia, a position that he held until 1998. He is now a Professor Emeritus in the UBC Michael Smith Laboratories, where he also served as Associate Director from 2001 to 2008.
Nationally, Dr. Ellis has served as a member of the ‘Committee on Research Grants’ at the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), as ‘Group Chair for Life Sciences’ at NSERC, and as a member of the ‘Science and Industry Advisory Committee’ of Genome Canada. In 2000/01, he served as co-Chair of the Expert Panel on The Future of Food Biotechnology for the Royal Society of Canada. In 2009, he was awarded the Society Gold Medal by the Canadian Society of Plant Physiologists for his outstanding contributions to the field of plant biology.
Dr. Ellis’ research interests have been in the area of plant cell biology and metabolism. He was recently leader of a major NSERC-funded CREATE graduate training project entitled “Working on Walls”, and his present research projects include:
· mapping signal transduction systems that plants use to sense and respond to environmental changes and developmental programming
· learning how plant cells control the structure and chemistry of their cell walls
